Why Change To Electronic Format?
Message From Undergraduate Chapter President – Dane Pigott

Ames Requires Sprinklers in Greek System
This initial issue of The Bridge was sent to the known e-mail addresses of the Iowa State Alumni Chapter. We encourage you to forward this message on to other Brothers that may have not received it. Future issues of The Bridge will NOT be sent to you unless you have subscribed your e-mail address to our new distribution list.
To subscribe for future issues, please see the top or bottom of this issue. Subscription is free, and this newsletter is only written for your benefit. Your e-mail needs no body or subject, but should be sent from the e-mail account you would like to subscribe. Once you have sent your e-mail, a response e-mail will be mailed back to you shortly. This response e-mail will confirm your request and a simple blank e-mail reply will add you to the list. You will then receive a final confirmation message. You are able to add or remove your e-mail address from this list as you wish.
Our distribution list is, and will continue to be kept secure. Future issues of The Bridge will be the only e-mail you receive. Please inform the editor of any complaints as we continue to make improvements.
The purpose of The Bridge Newsletter is to strengthen the communication of Triangle’s Iowa State Chapter. We will continue to share Undergraduate news, Alumni news, upcoming events, and the history of our Chapter. At a minimum we hope to reach our Alumni and Undergraduate members, but also hope to reach Brothers from other chapters, members of the Greek community, and those with general interest.
The Bridge has had an inconsistent circulation frequency in past years. Our goal is to provide a minimum of two issues per year (Spring & Fall). Additional issues may be distributed depending on the volume of content available. Hopefully this relieves any of your concerns about becoming flooded with e-mails from us.
This is the first electronically distributed edition of The Bridge Newsletter. The decision to shift from a paper mailed newsletter to an electronic format was made this past fall.
We believe the advantages of this format will benefit everyone. The elimination of paper pages allows for unlimited content without encountering layout issues. Cost savings in printing and postage will save the chapter nearly $800 per year. The elimination of the mailing preparation itself will save countless hours of volunteer time. The electronic format also allows for immediate distribution to its readers. Providing corrections and updates to the newsletter will now be possible in the event of mistakes.
Our efforts were encouraged by the success of Triangle’s national e-mail newsletter the Triangle Preview. As a technology inclined fraternity, we hope that our members support this change. Thank you.
If you have an idea for an article or would like to submit something for a future issue please e-mail the editor using the link at the bottom of this message. You could update your Brothers on your current life or business ventures. Or if courageous enough, you could share a funny college story. Announcements such as engagements, weddings, births, are also welcome. This newsletter can only improve with the help of its members.

Pizza lunch during Last year’s Alumni Work Weekend.
Dates for this year’s Alumni Work Weekend are now being considered. Last year’s Alumni Work Weekend in February 2006 was the first time this event was held. A large group of Alumni members returned to work with the Undergraduate members to maintain and repair the Chapter house. Alumni members brought their work clothes, tools, and expertise to accomplish a long list of tasks. The cold weather made outdoor tasks a little more challenging, but all tasks were accomplished. Last year concluded with the group going out for dinner and socializing. We will keep you informed of future plans, and hope you can join the entertainment this year.
Homecoming 2007
The 2007 Homecoming football game is scheduled for Saturday, October 20th. The Cyclones will play the Oklahoma Sooners. Coach McCarney is gone, and the Cyclones will start this season under new leadership. Coach Chizik comes from the University of Texas and has high hopes of fielding a competitive team. The game time won’t be announced until fall, but plan on attending the Triangle tailgating event before the game. Further details will follow later.
In addition to the football game, the Chapter Corporation meeting and Alumni Board meeting are typically held the day of the football game. If you are curious about how the Chapter is doing or are interesting in serving on the Alumni Board, you are welcome to attend. This is also a good time to take a tour of the Chapter house.
Tell Us About An Event
Do you have a Triangle event you would like to have held? Let us know what your interests are for getting together with your Triangle Brothers. E-mail the editor with your ideas. Your idea may be something that everyone wishes that had been thought of years ago.

This is the first issue of The Bridge that has been released since I joined Triangle, and I am very excited to see it revived. I hope that The Bridge can help us reconnect with some of our Brothers whom we may have lost touch with over the years. We recently welcomed these four new Iowa State Brothers: Kurt Kuker, Matthew Kroner, Robert Zelm, and Tyler Platt. We also have 6 returning pledges, as well as, one who just recently joined. We have a total of 25 members currently with the chapter, and we hope to expand our numbers this coming semester and summer. So much is going on at the Iowa State Chapter; I would like to review some of the major items.
Recently the Chapter has experienced a less than desirable GPA. To help address this issue we have revised our scholastic program. We are paired with Gamma Phi Beta and FIJI for Greek Week this year. We look forward to another great placing at the awards this year. Triangle Brothers currently hold many important leadership positions on campus, including President of both American Institute of Architecture Students and the Soil and Water Conservation Club.
This is an exciting time for Triangle, and a few Brothers have submitted articles to share with you. I hope you find them interesting. Lastly, on behalf of the Active members, I invite you to join us for Founders’ Day this year or to make an informal chapter house visit to meet your Triangle Brothers.
Dane Pigott
Active President
I am a junior in environmental science and am current President of the Soil and Water Conservation Club. I work on campus for the Wetland Research Group as a field and lab technician. Recently I became engaged to Stacy Schacherer over the winter break. Currently I am the New Member Educator and have previously held the offices of Philanthropy Chair, Recruitment Coordinator, and Scholarship Chair.
I have recently become heavily involved with college of design student groups. After becoming elected Iowa State’s President of American Institute of Architectural Students (AIAS), I was also elected Iowa State’s Design Council Treasurer. I enjoying helping out my department and college. I also realize that holding these positions helps reflect a positive image for Triangle. Another potential benefit may be added influence with the General Student Body during funding requests for the Leadership Advantage program that our Chapter helps to host each year.
Our new member class is comprised from students studying architecture, pre-architecture, construction engineering, computer engineering, biology, and aerospace engineering. This semester they have been busy designing a Triangle trivia game, designing Triangle T-shirts, performing an alumni phone call interview project, and organizing their own community service event.
Thanks to the generosity of Br. Brian Vanecek is03, we have incorporated lessons from the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People into our new member education program. Each week these members read an assigned portion of the book, and participate in a group discussion. Ultimately this leads to conversation about application to their lives and Triangle activities.

Yes, you have read the title of this article correctly. The mortgage for the Iowa State Chapter house will be completely paid-off August 15th! Let the editor know your fun idea for celebrating this occasion.
As part of the chapter renovation in 1985, this $225,000 loan was taken out from a bank in Ames. The Chapter has been making regular mortgage payments ever since. This mortgage was refinanced last April in order to take advantage of the low interest rates. The savings generated from this change were quite significant. Without any further mortgage payments, more money will be available for other needs. Emergency funds and other loans payments are likely to benefit.
In May 2006, the Ames city council passed an ordinance that will require sprinklers in many existing structures including fraternity and sorority houses. All structures need to be retrofitted by October 1, 2011 with the possibility of filing for up to a three-year extension. A number of Greek houses have already gone through the process of adding sprinkles in conjunction with renovation projects. It is thought that the cost of such a project at 125 North Hyland could easily exceed $50,000. The alumni board will be looking into getting estimates later this year.
The purpose of The Bridge is not to appeal to its membership for money, but we do recognize that some members may wish to make contributions. Funds that are raised are used to help pay Chapter house loans, make emergency repairs, make capital improvements, and fund Alumni events. Given below are a few of the ways you can directly influence the Iowa State Chapter.
For the past several years, Triangle’s Iowa State Alumni Board has accepted a voluntary dues contribution of $25/year from its Alumni members. These funds are not large in size, but make a big difference when brought together.
Individual donations of varying sizes have also been accepted. Some Alumni members have even organized with classmates in an effort to make a group contribution. Specific requests for the use of these donations may also be honored.
Contribute online through Paypal: www.istriangle.org/index_Donate.htm
Contributions by check may be made to “Iowa State Triangle Alumni Organization” and mailed to Treasurer, Nate Engle at the below address.

(We were saddened to learn of the passing of Brother Steve Smith is64. Brother Smith was one of the founding members of the Iowa State Triangle chapter and was recently a key part of the group that planned the 40th anniversary. The following excerpts are from an obituary printed at the time of his death in November 2005.)
Stephen R. Smith was the chief executive officer for 16 years of Publishing Business Systems, a company that provides advertising, circulation, production and business software to the newspaper industry. After early jobs with U.S. Steel and other companies, he spent most of his career in the publishing industry and was chief executive officer and president of Niche Software Systems and Publishing Business Systems, with offices in Barrington and St. Paul.
He was described by family members as someone who was comfortable with traveling at a moment's notice. "If there was something he wanted to do, he got on a plane to do it," said his daughter, Amy. "He was not a procrastinator." She said her father often traveled to Minnesota once or twice weekly to coach her basketball team and attend other sporting events when she and her late brother, Matt, who died in 1996 at age 25, lived there with their mother, Susan. "He really pushed us to be independent, take risks and do things we weren't 100 percent comfortable with to challenge ourselves," his daughter said.
Mr. Smith was born in Elgin and graduated from Elgin High School in 1961. In 1965, he graduated from Iowa State University, where he made lifelong friends. Three college friends, including his college roommate, made an annual two-week pilgrimage with him to Oktoberfest in Germany. Mr. Smith's daughter said it is difficult for Americans to get tables because they are passed down within German families. "About six or seven years ago, my dad got a table," she said. "That's a testament to his personality." His sister Dianne said Mr. Smith made friends everywhere he went. "Whether it was a mechanic, his waiter at a restaurant--everyone became a friend. That was a real skill that he had," she said.
In March 2005, Mr. Smith traveled with his family to Pittsburgh to watch his son, Scott, win the Division III national hockey tournament with the University of Colorado. When Mr. Smith became ill, he made it a priority to attend each of his son's games, no matter where they were, and traveled all over the country once or twice a week to watch him." He was very dedicated to us," his daughter said. "He never missed one of my birthdays," she said. "No matter where I was, he was there." Mr. Smith also celebrated his daughter's birthday in London and Portugal.
He spent the last few years splitting his time between Barrington and Tucson with his second wife, Valerie, whom he married in 1977. "He really lived his life," his daughter said. "He really took advantage of his time. When he put his mind to something, he got it done. He didn't wait around for anything." Along with his wife, daughter and son, Mr. Smith is survived by his mother, Lucille; and sisters, Dianne and Deborah.
