Chapter Endowment Fund update E-mail

Hello Brothers,

We want to pass along an update on the progress of our Chapter Endowment Fund.  Each of you should have received a letter from John Pritchard in the mail in May (if you didn't please email us so we can update our information).  The text of that letter is also in the post below this one. We also posted the letter via our email distribution list, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.  Our goal is to establish a $100k endowment that will support the undergraduates through annual disbursements.  Surprisingly, the response to this call for support was disappointing.

The good news is that we exceeded the minimum threshold of $25k necessary to provide some funds to the undergraduates this school year. The bad news is the amount we've raised.  To date we've received $52,900 ($32,513 cash and $20,387 pledged).  Out of over 412 alumni, only 18 have donated or pledged - ouch.  We know we can do better than that.  Some brothers had indicated they would make a donation, but have yet to do so.  We think others may have set it aside to think about it and then forgot.  Because of the critical importance to the newly re-formed chapter, we ask you to please pick it back up and make a donation soon.  As mentioned in the letter, we’d like to achieve a high participation rate, even if each donation isn't large, so we can send a message of support to the undergraduates.

Please participate. Thank you very much!

Triangle Brothers gather in Ames for VEISHEA weekend to celebrate 50 years of the fraternity

May 7, 2014

Posted on behalf of Br. John Pritchard is82:

Dear Brothers,

It's John Pritchard. I write this after having participated in a fantastic weekend in Ames celebrating Triangle's 50th anniversary. Approximately 140 Triangles and their spouses participated. We had a weekend full of activities, some business, seemingly perpetual eating, socializing, laughter, and stories, stories, stories! Contrary to rumors, the riots earlier in the week were not instigated by Triangle alumni. And other than not having a parade to watch, we were unaffected by the cancellation of VEISHEA.

We provided information regarding the current status of the chapter from both the alumni and undergraduate perspectives. I'll mention just a few of the highlights. After much planning and effort, we conducted a successful re-colonization. We have conducted, and will continue, training and mentoring to assist the young men as they establish their chapter. Fifteen men were recently initiated and the chapter currently has 4 pledges (3 of whom are going to be initiated this weekend). As you know, we no longer have the house on North Hyland nor the Annex, but we worked with ISU to secure a portion of a dorm floor next year for Triangle men so they can be together. We've also notified ISU that we wish to buy a fraternity house should one become available. But the membership is not yet large enough to support a house anyway. In the meantime, the men are also about to rent a facility near campus where they can meet between classes, study, and socialize.

At the gala event, we announced the establishment of the Iowa State Triangle Chapter Endowment Fund (CEF). Managed by the Triangle Education Foundation (TEF), all funds donated are strictly for the benefit of the ISU Triangle Chapter. We benefit from the TEF managing the investment as part of the overall TEF portfolio and managing the process of distributing funds to the ISU chapter in accordance with applicable tax laws. Annually, approximately 5% of the endowment is available to the chapter for education related expenses, including scholarships, education space within a chapter house or facility, and sending men to participate in Triangle or North-American lnterfraternity Conference (NIC) leadership training or educational programs. With ISU CEF funds we hope to send many men to the Herbert Scobie Leadership School this summer so they not only receive incredible training, they plug in to other Triangle men and resources which is so important at this early stage of the chapter. Unlike donations to the chapter itself, donations to the ISU CEF are tax deductible.

A huge amount of effort went into planning the re-colonization of the chapter. Despite significant class loads and other commitments, the re-founding members took the initiative, put in the difficult work and long hours, and re-started the legacy of Triangle at ISU - a legacy we all share. Now it's time for us to show our support. The CEF is a means for us to provide immediate benefit to the men.

At the gala, we announced a goal to raise $100k for the CEF which will allow approximately $5,000 per year to be available to the chapter. We also announced that the CEF has already been seeded with $45,000 from Brothers Dexter Duhan, Jim Fay, Chris Moe, and me.

During the gala, three of our founders gave the keynote address. One of the common messages from Lynn Davis, Ed McCracken, and Ted Settle was how their Triangle experience benefited them throughout their lives. I am certain all of us could make the same statement - we each have benefited from Triangle. We don't often ask for support, and it's not the most comfortable endeavor, but I'm asking now because it's critically important. If you benefited in any way from Triangle, I ask you to pay it forward. Not all of us are able to commit our time, but we all have the ability to make a donation – of any amount. I have benefited from Triangle and so I have committed my time and money to give other young men the same opportunity. I also serve on the Board of Directors of the Triangle Education Foundation because I've seen how its mission greatly benefits young Triangle men. I ask you to please contribute as much as you can to the CEF so that we can quickly achieve our goal and begin to provide critical financial support to our new brothers. I hope we can show our support to the men not only by quickly achieving our $100k goal, but by having a large percentage of our alumni donate at some level.

Installment payment options are available so you can make monthly, quarterly, or annual payments. Donation information is enclosed. If you have any questions, you can email me or Amy Buchheit at the Education Foundation.

Please don't delay as we need the funds to be able to send men to programs this summer. I thank you very much.

John P. Pritchard
