Big News from the Iowa State Chapter E-mail

April 11, 2012

Dear Triangle Brother:

VEISHEA weekend is right around the corner, and Triangle alumni from around the country will be descending on Ames to discuss the future of our Fraternity – setting ourselves up for success for the next 50 years.

I was hoping to have more definitive news to share with you at this time, but I can tell you that a number of your brothers have been working on a plan to purchase the Beta Sigma Psi house at 223 Lynn Avenue that is currently for sale. I know this news is probably a surprise, so let me share with you how we’ve gotten to this point.

After we closed the Active Chapter just over a year ago, our facilities committee had done an extensive study of what it might cost for us to renovate the chapter home at 125 N. Hyland, build a new house on our land, or purchase somewhere in the Greek system and renovate. Quite honestly, all of the plans seemed daunting, and tearing down and building a new 30-man house seemed the most reasonable at $2.5 – 3.5M. Renovating the current structure would undoubtedly be more, and purchasing a different house wasn’t an option last year.

When we learned of the 223 Lynn Avenue property, a group of Iowa State Triangles made the trip to Ames to check it out. It was built in 1985 and they are asking $650K for it. It, of course, doesn’t have the charm or history of our beloved 125 N. Hyland, but it is structurally sound, holds 50 men, is equidistant to Marston Hall as our house, and is much closer to the rest of the Greek system. Because of the age of the property, it needs relatively little work (though a facelift wouldn’t hurt), and after selling the N. Hyland properties, it would cut our fundraising needs down to $1 – 1.5M. With just over 400 living alums, that is a much more achievable number.

Another fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi is currently using the property, and would continue to pay rent for the next few years until we are ready to renovate and move in. With our recolonization scheduled for summer/fall of 2013 we could have enough members to move in the fall of 2015.

I understand this is big news and you probably have a lot of questions. Campaign Steering Board Co-Chairs Ed McCracken is64 and John Pritchard is82 will be in Ames for the weekend along with myself and the rest of the Alumni Board to answer all questions you may have. We have activities planned for Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, including dinner each night, an alumni meeting at the Gateway Center, and we’re trying to arrange a walk-through of the Lynn property. Come to any or all of the activities – families are welcome to join!

I hope you can make it. Please fill out this short form and let us know your plans. If you are unable to come to Ames, we will email a conference dial-in for the Alumni Meeting at 3:00 PM Central Time on Saturday, April 21. Check www.istriangle.org for more details and updates.

This is a big step in the history of our chapter – one that will help catapult us back into a leadership position on campus and help us create a positive experience for Iowa State Triangle men for the next 50 years.
