President's Message E-mail
Hi all!

I’m writing this note as your newly elected Iowa State Triangle Alumni Board President for 2019-2020. Frankly, this note is a little longer than I would like, but I want everyone to know the great things going on at Iowa State Triangle as well as our key priorities for the coming year. Bear with me please.

I want to personally thank John Pritchard for his too numerous to mention contributions to the ISU Triangle Alumni Board and Active Chapter. John stepped down from the Alumni Board President job at the end of October and left me some huge boots to fill.

John led our effort to acquire the Sigma Chi house at Iowa State, negotiate the deal and worked with one of our very generous, Founding Charter Alumni who made a $1,000,000 contribution for the down payment on our house. John worked with Jason Carroll, our Alumni Treasurer to get our financials in order and get the deal closed, all in about 45 days. There were numerous significant hurdles, barriers and setbacks. With John’s leadership and the support of the ISU Alumni Board, our partners at Triangle Education Foundation and Triangle Building and Housing Corporation, it all got done. Iowa State Triangle has the newest, nicest, most modern and best located fraternity house at Iowa State University. Thank you, John! It would not have happened lest you did it! We are forever grateful! And a very big thank you to one certain Alumni, Dexter Duhan for your most generous contributions. In addition to the house down payment, Dexter contributed another $1M as the lead gift for the Capital Campaign. There are other special Alumni who have made significant contributions, but I want to recognize Dexter because his generosity is in a league all of its own!

Although no longer an official Board member, John has agreed to stay involved with this Board with a focus on our continuing financial actions including our Capital Campaign effort and obtaining mortgage financing for the house. After our successful $2 Million Capital Campaign is complete, we expect to have a $1,500,000 mortgage balance on our $4,600,000 house.

Thank you, John, from the bottom of my heart!

Thank you to Brant Bristow for serving as Vice President of the Board the last number of years.

Congratulations and thank you to all the Board members for your commitment to serve. There is a lot to be done.

I accept the responsibility as Alumni President, with a combination of enthusiasm and commitment to our Alumni and our Active Chapter. From my view, it’s a very critical time for Iowa State Triangle. We have a new house, the largest we’ve owned, but a house that comes with a lot of responsibility. It comes with both a financial and a growth responsibility. We plan to reach 45 men living in house to reach our budget target. The good news is we are on the path to achieving that.

I want to outline our key Alumni Board priorities for the upcoming year:
  • Active Chapter Support
    • We will work closely with the Active Chapter Leadership to support their efforts on Recruitment, Mentoring, Member Retention, Brotherhood, Academic Excellence and improving Chapter Operations
    • We will focus our efforts supporting and insuring the Active Chapter continues to be successful in their recruitment efforts so that we achieve our “Steady State Target” and financial strength no later than September Fall Semester 2021
      • Quinn Moran continues with us on a part time basis and is focused on working closely with the Recruitment team to meet and exceed our expectations and goals
      • The Scholarship Programs we offer Incoming ISU Freshmen and FIRST Robotics Team Members Incoming to ISU as Freshmen will help tremendously, as it has this year.
    • We have a Recruitment Strategy and Business Plan and the Scholarship Program is one component, not the only component
  • Improve Alumni Relations and Increase Alumni Engagement with each other and the Active Chapter
  • Strengthen our Financial Position
    • We will support John Pritchard’s efforts to obtain a mortgage for the Chapter House for $1,500,000.
    • We will work with Aaron Girson to reach our Capital Campaign Goal of $2,000,000.
    • Jason Carroll, our Alumni Treasurer has implemented QuickBooks for the Active Chapter and works with the Active Treasurer and President on a regular basis to get our Active Chapter Financial house in a further position of strength
  • House Improvements and Operational Excellence
    • We’ll make necessary repairs and improvements to the house so we can accommodate our chapter growth and reach operational excellence by running a “tight ship”. Jim Meier-Gast and Tim Sullivan lead our efforts in working closely with the House Manager to make the above-mentioned repairs and improvements.

Those are our goals and priorities. We are spreading the workload and asking the entire Board along with a number of Alumni to help. Let me know if you want to volunteer!

Let me delve into a few membership numbers.

We are initiating 14 Pledges this Saturday. Quinn Moran, our Leadership Consultant and our Recruitment Team were instrumental in making this happen.

We graduate four men this spring and if we don’t pledge any additional men between now and Fall 2020, we will have 31 men living in house Fall 2020. Pretty darn good considering our starting point 15 months ago.

Our plan for the house at “Steady State” is forty-five 45 men, paying room and board living in house. Even though the time line for reaching our Steady State target is Fall 2021, we have a real shot to reach that number by Fall 2020. We need to add 14 net new members that will live in the house and pay board between now and Fall 2020. Adding 14 is difficult but possible.

We plan to reach our target and fill the house with great young men and that will enable financial stability and security for the long-term. After getting to know most of our Actives and Pledges, I am confident that with support from our Alumni, Triangle Fraternity at Iowa State has a great future.

I challenge each Alumni to find an incoming ISU freshman STEM major in your area with great grades and introduce them to our Iowa State Triangle Recruitment team led by Seth Pierre and Quinn Moran. Any assistance our Alumni can provide in terms of referrals of talented young men from your hometown coming to ISU next fall will be much appreciated. We launched the official “Public Phase” of our Capital Campaign at the Alumni meeting on October 26th and you received that Press Release a few weeks ago. Aaron Girson, Vice President of the Triangle Education Foundation leads our efforts for our Capital Campaign. Aaron’s charter is to work with ISU Triangle Alumni to raise $2,000,000 so we can pay down our debt to $1,500,000. We intend to get a mortgage for the $1.5M and we need all Alumni to help get us to the $2M. As of this moment, we either have the money in the bank or commitments from Alumni for a total of 1,650,000 which leaves us with a remaining amount of $350,000. We are 80% of the way there thanks to some very generous Alumni.

The Actives are working hard to build a great chapter at Iowa State. Now I need to ask you, our great Alumni, for your help. I realize our Alumni are at different stages in our lives. Some can afford to give more than others. I ask each of you to give as much as you can to our Capital Campaign. The Alumni who have given already, were generous because they believe Triangle Fraternity changed their lives for the better, that the experience of Triangle at Iowa State, the friends they made, the life they’ve lived, made them better men, that they were able to achieve the success in their life they have because of Triangle and the experience with their brothers while at Iowa State prepared us for life.

BTW, if you can find a way to contribute $25,000, even if it’s over a few years, we have an Alumni who will match your contribution. Stretch if you can. Contact Aaron Girson at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 269-589-5744 if you can help!

We will make Homecoming at Iowa State a very special annual event in an effort to get our Alumni back to Ames to meet up with your old friends. For some of you, I mean really OLD friends. The experience those of us had this year and last year, meeting the brothers new and old, was tremendous. We went home invigorated. I ask each of you to come back next year for Homecoming weekend October 17th when the Cyclones play Oklahoma. Mark your calendars. Call your best Triangle buddies and get them to commit to come back and meet up. I promise you it will be a great weekend!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

Yours in F, S & C,
